SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 16 (Reuters) - OpenAI, whose generative AI products initially raised fears of widespread cheating on homework, is now exploring how it can get its popular ChatGPT chatbot into classrooms, according to a senior executive. Backed by billions of dollars from Microsoft (MSFT.O), OpenAI kicked off the generative AI craze last November by releasing its ChatGPT chatbot, which became one of the world's fastest-growing applications. But within a few months, teachers started seeing how ChatGPT could be beneficial, he said. A new team at OpenAI would be an extension of the work the company has already done to integrate its technology into the classroom. There are myriad ways to use ChatGPT in classrooms, said Andrew Mayne, a former OpenAI employee who works with educators through his AI consulting firm Interdimensional.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Television crews at the Pan American Games had equipment stolen this week from the compound of Estadio Nacional, the site of Friday's opening ceremony, heightening concerns about crime at the tournament hosting over 6,800 athletes. A contractor, and not local police, was in charge of security at the Estadio Nacional compound when the incident took place. The Pan American Games, the largest multisport event in the Americas, are held one year before the Olympics. Police presence at Estadio Nacional was greater Thursday than at the beginning of the week. Organizers of the Pan American Games had previously told The Associated Press they had increased their attention in check points at the gates of every sporting venue.

The FDA had in 2021 set a new voluntary goal for manufacturers and chain restaurants to cut salt levels by an average of 12% in packaged foods, because excessive salt consumption has been linked to high blood pressure, a leading cause of heart attack and stroke. The majority of sodium consumed comes from processed, packaged and prepared foods, not from salt people add to their food when cooking or eating," said Susan Mayne, the director of FDA's food safety and nutrition division. Friday's proposed rule looks to change the FDA's "standards of identity" (SOI) for over 20 items, ranging from cheese to cereal flour. The SOIs list ingredients that standardized foods must contain, and which ingredients are optional.

The Food and Drug Administration for the first time cleared a lab-grown meat product developed by a California start-up as safe for human consumption, marking a key milestone for cell-cultivated meats to eventually become available in U.S. supermarkets and restaurants. The FDA cleared Upside Foods, formerly known as Memphis Meats, to use animal cell culture technology to take living cells from chickens and grow the cells in a controlled environment to produce cultured animal cell food. The agency said it evaluated Upside Food's production and cultured cell material and has "no further questions" about the safety of its cultivated chicken filet. The company will be able to bring its products to market once it's been inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Upside Foods, a California-based company that makes meat from cultured chicken cells, will be able to begin selling its products once its facilities have been inspected by the US Department of Agriculture. Advocates hope that cultured meat will reduce the need to slaughter animals for food and help with the climate crisis. “At scale, cultivated meat is projected to use substantially less water and land than conventionally-produced meat.”Although not technically an approval, the FDA said that a thorough pre-market consultation process had been completed. The clearance only applies to food made from cultured chicken cells by Upside, but the statement said the FDA “is ready to work with additional firms developing cultured animal cell food.”

USDA and FDA together regulate cell-cultured meat under a 2019 agreement between the two agencies. USDA will oversee the processing and labeling of cell-cultured meat products. Demand for alternatives to farmed meat has grown alongside awareness of the high greenhouse gas emissions of raising livestock.
